Mahjong is a game that has been around for centuries, and it's pretty easy to play. It's a fun way for us to spend an afternoon together. The rules are pretty simple - but challenging enough to keep us on our toes!
How is the game played?
The game is played in rounds, with each round consisting of 13 tricks. We have to deal out all the tiles face down. This game requires four players, so there will be three other stacks to take from beside our stack. We can only pick up one tile at a time and use it in an open space on the board. If we don't have an open spot to place our tile, we must discard a tile from one of the stacks in front of us. If there are no tiles left to pick up or discard, then it's time for another player's turn! When we have taken all 13 tricks, the round is over.
In each trick, there are three tiles with numerical values from one to nine and an extra side of bamboo or "eye" with zero points in the game. There are also wind tiles with directions written on them. These can change during gameplay! Our goal is to get rid of our tiles by matching them with free tiles on the board. When we match identical tiles, they are removed from play, and points are added to our score. The first player who gets rid of all their tiles wins! There will be a total of four rounds in each game; whoever has the highest score at the end is the winner!
